The reason DJs treat these as three separate axes is that they genuinely vary independently. Two tracks in 8A at 126 BPM can be a hypnotic warm-up cut and a hands-in-the-air peak record. How to rate a track's energy from 1 to 10

Rate honestly and relative to your own catalogue. If you play mostly deep house, your "10" is not a hard-techno DJ's "10" — and that's fine. The scale only has to be internally consistent for the person mixing.
The shape of a set: building an energy arc
A set is a story told in energy. The most common and most effective shape is not a straight climb but a wave: rise, peak, deliberate dip, rise again to a higher peak. The dips are not mistakes — they're what make the peaks feel like peaks. A set that only goes up flattens out, because a floor that never rests has no contrast left to give.
1. Warm-up (energy 3–5)
Set the tone and the tempo. Restraint here is a skill: opening at a 7 leaves nowhere to go and burns the room before it's full.
2. The build (energy 5–8)
Climb steadily, ideally one energy step at a time. Sudden jumps of three or more levels feel jarring unless you're using a big breakdown to reset expectations.
3. The peak (energy 8–10)
Your biggest records, deployed when the room is ready. Peaks are most powerful when they're earned by the climb, not spammed from the start.
4. The planned dip (drop 2–3 levels)
After a peak, deliberately pull back. The floor breathes, and you've reloaded the tension you'll spend on the next build.

Combining energy with harmonic mixing
Energy and key work best as a two-step filter, applied in that order. Energy chooses the region of your library; key chooses the exact track within it. Reverse the order and you'll often find a perfectly compatible key that's completely wrong for the moment.
The two-step transition
- Decide the energy move first. Are you holding (same level), lifting (+1), or releasing (−2 to −3)? That narrows hundreds of tracks to a handful of candidates.
- Then apply the key filter. From those candidates, keep only the ones that are harmonically compatible with the current track — same Camelot value, ±1, or the A↔B relative-key switch.
- Break ties by ear. Groove, vocal, and drop structure decide between the two or three tracks that survive both filters.

- Opening too hot. Starting a set at energy 7 leaves no runway. The whole point of an arc is that there's somewhere higher to go.
- Never dipping. A relentless climb numbs the floor. Planned drops of two or three levels are what recharge the tension you spend on peaks.
